5 Summer Treats for Dogs

Pet parents want to share all the good times with their pooch. That includes summer treats for dogs that make them comfortable on hot days and help prevent heatstroke, which can cause damage to his internal organs. Most vets agree, though, that you should avoid giving goodies like ice cream, frozen yogurt, and popsicles to your dog. The good news is, there’s an abundance of DIY treats you can prepare for your pet to help him manage the summer heat.

5 Safe and Delicious Summer Treats for Your Pup

Dogs are always looking for ways to score a treat, and it’s up to you to make sure your pet gets the right ones. It’s tempting to share some ice cream or frozen yogurt with them, but keep in mind dairy products top the food intolerance list for many canines. They might also contain Xylitol, an artificial sweetener that can be highly toxic for dogs.

Here are five delicious and safe summer treats you can whip up easily and quickly for your four-legged companion.

  1. Fresh, frozen banana chunks, blueberries, green beans, peach chunks, and strawberries are a quick treat. If you use packaged versions, be sure to check the label for added Xylitol.

  2. Blended frozen fruit goodies are always a hit (but remember, no grapes!). Puree one cup of pineapple and a cup and a half of watermelon. Place banana slices at the bottom of an ice cube tray and pour the pureed fruit over the top. Freeze until solid.

  3. Fill your pup’s Kong toy with some chopped-up favorite foods and then freeze. Peanut butter is a good choice but be sure the brand you use doesn’t contain Xylitol.

  4. If your pet loves carrots, pop some fresh baby versions into the freezer. It’s one of the easiest ways to create a cooling, tasty treat he’ll get double the enjoyment from—it’s a perfect chew toy when it first comes out of the freezer, and as it thaws, he’ll enjoy its tastiness.

  5. For a savory treat, combine grilled chicken bites, cooked carrot, and chicken broth in a food processor and freeze.

A final note on yogurt. While technically a dairy product, fresh plain yogurt with good bacteria can be easier for some dogs to tolerate. If your dog is one of them, feel free to add a little yogurt to any of the above treats.

Keep Your Pet Cool All Summer Long

Keeping your dog cool in the summer heat protects him from an elevated body temperature. Along with these cooling summer treats, be sure to provide your pooch with plenty of activity and fresh, clean water for hydration. During the hottest days, indoors with air conditioning is probably the best course. If your pet isn't a fan of being cooped up inside, set up some outdoor shade and a misting system, or let him run through a yard sprinkler. Cooling collars and bandanas can also provide relief.

We hope your pet enjoys these tasty summer treats to keep him cool all summer long!
